Training and deep dives
Annotation theory, canvas practice, handoff, and prioritization.
Annotation Theory
Our annotated designs are only as effective as they are understood. Using this Annotation Toolkit isn't only about how an interface gets annotated and where you put those components on the canvas.
Avoiding hand-off friction
Design annotations can transform our work for the better, but they don't do this on their own. They aren't a replacement for good planning or collaboration, and they don't fix fundamentally inaccessible designs—they're a tool to help communicate more clearly with one another so that we only have to do it once.
Best practices
The best annotation kit is only as useful as it is legible for the people consuming the annotations. Here are our recommended techniques for keeping our documentation easy to read and free of overwhelming clutter.
The Tiered Model
It's not always clear what parts of a design absolutely need to be annotated before shipping. Time constraints may make it hard to thoroughly annotate everything. We can mitigate that by prioritizing what we annotate based on the highest severity of a potential issue as well as annotations that are quicker to fill out.
